About Wajima Workshop Nagaya
Experience the charm of traditional Wajima lacquerware in a craftsmen's residence that gathers five workshops.
Details
A gathering of five Wajima-nuri related workshops, known as the "Shokunin Nagaya." Here, you can not only admire Wajima-nuri works in the gallery but also observe the production of lacquerware and experience techniques such as "Chinkin" (沈金) or "Maki-e" (蒔繪), allowing you to create your own hand-painted chopsticks. The attached lacquerware shop displays a wide array of Wajima-nuri products, including bowls and more.
There are three types of experience courses available. In the "Chinkin Experience," a design is transferred onto the surface of the lacquerware, followed by carving with various tools using the Chinkin technique, and then filling in with lacquer and color. Multiple sketch patterns are available, and you can also use your own designed patterns.
In the popular "Chopstick DIY," you can choose one of the two main techniques of Wajima-nuri. The "Chinkin" technique involves carving grooves on the surface of the lacquered chopsticks, filling them with lacquer, and then embedding gold powder; while "Maki-e" involves using a brush to apply lacquer to depict a design, which is then covered with gold powder.
If you visit the Wajima Workshop Nagaya, start at the Information Workshop. Here, you can find an introduction to Wajima's Western-style engineering and tourism information. You can watch artisans at work in various studios, and there is also a gallery showcasing the history, techniques, and related artists of Wajima-nuri.
