About Wansui Villa

A villa built in the architectural style of the French Renaissance.

Details

Mansui-so is a villa built in 1922 by Count Jūmatsu Sadamori, a descendant of the former Matsuyama feudal lord. Count Jūmatsu, who lived in France for an extended period as a military attaché, was deeply influenced by French culture, which led him to construct Mansui-so in the architectural style of the French Renaissance. Designed by the renowned architect Kishi Shichirō, many significant buildings of that time were also created by him. To meet the expectations of the count, who had a deep love for French culture, Kishi Shichirō spent several months traveling to Europe to study Western architecture. This effort resulted in a building whose design concepts and completion, from its shape and structure to furniture arrangement and interior decoration, reached the highest standards, ultimately creating a Western-style architecture that astonished Europe. Mansui-so is the earliest reinforced concrete building in Ehime Prefecture, consisting of one basement level and three above-ground floors. Having survived the destruction of World War II, it retains the appearance it had at the time of its construction and has been designated as a tangible cultural property of Ehime Prefecture and an important tangible cultural property of the country. Not only does Mansui-so possess high artistic value in its architecture, but it also frequently hosts various events such as exhibitions of paintings, calligraphy, and traditional artworks. It is worth visiting in conjunction with the activities taking place.
