Details

Washiomi Shrine is known as the oldest shrine in the Kanto region. It is a famous shrine that appeared in the chronicle "Azuma Kagami" from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) in Japan. The shrine is highly revered by the samurai class and has received strong support from rulers throughout different eras. For example, it was once protected by the Hojo and Ashikaga clans; the Kamakura shogunate rebuilt the main hall on its behalf; and it received a donation of 400 koku of land from the Tokugawa shogunate. The shrine houses many cultural treasures, including ancient documents, old mirrors, and swords, making it a worthwhile destination for history enthusiasts. In addition, the "Hajime Ichiryu Saimaraku Kagura" event is held every year on New Year's Day, February 14, April 10, July 31, October 10, and the first Tori day of December. This event has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of the country. The solemn and sacred dances, along with the unique rhythms of the festival music, create a simple yet elegant atmosphere. Washiomi Shrine is also a popular destination for New Year visits, ranking second in the number of visitors in the prefecture. It enshrines the deity Okuninushi, known for granting good relationships. In recent years, the shrine has gained fame as a setting for popular anime and is regarded as one of the earliest shrines in the anime pilgrimage circuit.
