About White Silk Waterfall (Nagano Prefecture)
A beautiful waterfall with countless streams flowing down the rock face like white silk.
Details
The Shiraito Falls in Nagano Prefecture is a famous tourist destination in the Karuizawa area, located along the "Shiraito Highland Road," which is suitable for driving. The melting snow from Mount Asama flows down the rock face in gentle streams, resembling countless white silk threads, hence the name. The highly transparent water of the waterfall resembles an ethereal white curtain, and the area around the falls is a refreshing space filled with negative ions, providing a healing atmosphere. The waterfall has a drop of 3 meters, and the gentle stream extends about 70 meters in a beautifully curved arc, creating a picturesque scene. The surrounding greenery and the white waterfall complement each other, offering a rich visual experience with striking color contrasts.
Visitors can enjoy the changing natural beauty around the waterfall throughout the year. There are vibrant new greens in spring and summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter, along with evening illumination events in summer and winter. The "Light Sculpture Projection Show," held every summer, is particularly popular. This event takes place on specific dates from late July to late August. Magical images are projected onto the white waterfall, creating a visually stunning feast filled with dreamlike colors, and it was selected as a "Category III Night View Heritage" in Japan's Night View Heritage in 2015.
From mid-December to March each year, visitors can also see artificial ice pillars created from the natural water flowing from Shiraito Falls, with the crystal-clear ice pillars exuding a mysterious charm.
