🗺️ Xiao'an Gorge Hot Springs小安峡（おやすきょう）大噴湯

Located upstream of the Minase River in Akita Prefecture, "Koyasu Gorge" is a V-shaped valley formed over many years by the rushing river. The most famous attraction here is the "Koyasu Gorge Great Hot Spring." Following the rocky steps down about 60 meters, there is a path where hot water and steam occasionally burst forth from various spots. This stunning phenomenon, which conveys the earth's vitality, is caused by steam and hot water accumulating in the geothermal layer and erupting through fissures. It is a unique landscape specific to Koyasu Gorge and is quite rare in the world. From the Kawarayu Bridge, which spans the gorge, visitors can observe the steam eruptions. The famous traveler from the Edo period, Sugisaka Masumi, also described this place in his Takamatsu Diary, noting, "The hot water erupts violently, splashing everywhere, rumbling like the snoring of the thunder god." In autumn, the dense trees on both sides of the gorge are dyed in vibrant red hues, attracting numerous visitors. In winter, the gorge is adorned with massive icicles known in the Akita dialect as "Shigakko (しがっこ)," creating a unique and beautiful scene. *Please note that the path is closed from late November to late April each year, depending on snow conditions.*

The V-shaped gorge "Xiao Anxia," with a height difference of about 60 meters, is a must-visit attraction. You can witness the stunning spectacle of hot water and steam erupting. In spring, there are fresh greens; in autumn, the leaves turn red; and in winter, ice pillars create beautiful scenery in each season. You can access the Great Hot Spring from two entrances, one upstream and one downstream. The "Kawara-yu Bridge," which overlooks the Great Hot Spring from directly above, is the best viewpoint.
