About Yachiyo Ferry Crossing
The historic ferry connecting Tokyo's Shibamata and Chiba's Matsudo area.
Details
The Yachiyo Ferry has a long history of 1,600 years and connects the Shibamata area of Katsushika, Tokyo, with Matsudo City in Chiba Prefecture across the river. This ferry does not have a fixed schedule; it operates whenever there are a certain number of passengers. Walking along the handcrafted pier, if a boat is docked, you can simply pay the fare to the boatman to board. Even if there are no boats docked, just waiting a moment will usually result in a boat arriving quickly from the opposite shore. Riding on a traditional hand-rowed boat, filled with a nostalgic charm, allows you to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a leisurely ferry ride of about 5 minutes. Depending on weather or river conditions, the service may be suspended or switched to a motorboat. The ferry terminal on the Katsushika side is located just a 5-minute walk from the Shibamata Taishakuten, a popular tourist spot made famous by the movie "The Man's Misery." It is recommended to include this in your sightseeing itinerary.
Highlights
You can experience a historic ferry. It takes about 5 minutes by boat to reach the other side. There are no staff members except for the boatman, and there are no prominent signs. Each boat can accommodate up to 30 people.
