About Yaegaki Shrine
A popular shrine in Shimane known for its reputation in fostering good relationships.
Details
A popular shrine located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. This ancient shrine enshrines Susanoo no Mikoto and Inada-hime no Mikoto, who appear in the myth of the eight-headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi. Susanoo defeated the serpent and saved Inada-hime, and later the two became husband and wife, attracting many visitors who come to pray for good relationships, marital harmony, and safe childbirth.
Inside the shrine grounds, there are several relationship-related attractions, including two camellia trees known as "Renritsu Tamatsubaki," which are intertwined at their roots like a couple. In particular, the "Sakusa Megami no Mori" located behind the shrine is said to be the sacred place where Susanoo hid Inada-hime. The construction of eight fences to protect Inada-hime also inspired the name of the shrine. Visitors can also try divination at the "Mirror Pond" in the forest. By placing a coin on a divination paper floating on the water's surface, the time and distance it takes for the paper to sink indicate the result.
In the past, a mural of a deity that was only visible at the shrine was decorated on the main ticket. This mural, created by a famous Heian period artist, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is currently displayed in the treasure repository (for a fee) for the public to view. The mural, a precious part of the shrine's architectural history, is definitely worth seeing.
