About Yamamoto-tei
A cultural heritage that perfectly combines Japanese and Western styles, where modern Japanese architecture and the courtyard-style garden harmoniously merge.
Details
Yamamoto-tei is a study garden that blends modern Japanese architecture with traditional Japanese garden styles. The living room features a modern Japanese style, while the lounge combines traditional study hall elements with a tea room style, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. The glass windows, sliding doors, and electric lights that create a bright space reflect characteristics of modern Western architectural style. The layout of the lounge cleverly integrates with the Japanese garden style, preserving the charm of the past. It has been designated as a registered cultural heritage site in Katsushika Ward and has been open to the public since 1991.
The most attractive highlight of Yamamoto-tei is its study hall-style garden. The lush garden is not large, but through ingenious spatial design, it creates a sense of depth and tranquility. Sitting within it allows one to forget the hustle and bustle of the city. Yamamoto-tei offers dining services (with a fee for food and drinks). In the room overlooking the "main garden," visitors can enjoy the view of the traditional Japanese garden while savoring matcha, coffee, or red bean soup with white rice dumplings, enjoying a moment of peaceful elegance.
Highlights
Built in 1920 on the foundation of traditional Japanese architecture and gardens, Yamamoto-tei has undergone multiple expansions and renovations, skillfully integrating Western architectural styles into its elegant, college-style structure.
There are many highlights not to be missed, such as the Western-style room "Phoenix Room" and the stained glass decorations flanking the corridor on both sides of the longhouse. Inside Yamamoto-tei, there are historically significant underground air raid shelter ruins, old warehouses, and a tea room.
Yamamoto-tei is highly regarded by overseas Japanese garden specialty magazines for its college-style garden. The lush greenery of the garden beautifully contrasts with the red carpet of the corridor. Visitors can enjoy the garden scenery while savoring matcha, shiratama red bean soup, coffee, or soda, spending a leisurely time.
