About Yanai Shirakabe Old Street
The top tourist attraction in Yanai City, perfect for a leisurely stroll while taking photos.
Details
In the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Yanai City thrived as one of the leading commercial port cities in the Seto Inland Sea during the Edo period. The "Shirakabe Street" in the Kōichi Kanaya area of Yanai City retains some earthen storehouse buildings from the Edo period. During the feudal era, it was referred to as the "Nahu of the Iwakuni Domain." This old street, once crowded with large carts loaded with goods, has been designated as an important national preservation district for traditional buildings.
During the stable climate period from spring to autumn, the most famous "Goldfish Lanterns" of Yanai hang from the eaves of the townhouses with painted white walls and lattice windows. It is said that during the Bakumatsu period, Yanai merchants were inspired by the "Neputa Festival" of Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture and created these lanterns using dyes from the traditional fabric "Yanai Jima." Once lit, the goldfish lanterns are hung on the streets at night as a way to welcome the Obon festival.
Every year on August 13, the "Goldfish Lantern Festival" is held, decorating the "Shirakabe Old Street" with around four thousand goldfish lanterns. At night, the lights illuminate the entire town, creating a dreamy atmosphere. The grand festival features a parade of "Goldfish Floats," goldfish lantern dances, and fireworks displays, attracting numerous visitors and creating a lively scene.
Highlights
On the white walls, there are scenes of goldfish lanterns swimming gracefully, making every photo look beautiful.
