Over 400 years ago, this hot spring area thrived as a spa destination. It is located at an altitude of about 330 meters on a plateau. According to ancient legends, the hot spring is said to effectively improve ailments related to the waist and legs.
The streets lined with 14 hot spring inns, souvenir shops, and dining establishments exude a retro atmosphere, immersing visitors in a sense of nostalgia. There are also public baths, "神之湯" (Kami no Yu) and "壽之湯" (Kotobuki no Yu), where visitors can easily enjoy soaking, making it perfect for day-trippers.
Shops along the street sell "温泉蛋" (onsen tamago) made with hot spring water, as well as ice cream flavored with buckwheat flour, soy milk, and sake, allowing for a delightful culinary experience while strolling. For those looking to purchase souvenirs or traditional crafts, the "宮城藏王木芥子館" (Miyagi Zao Karasumi-kan) located across from "木芥子橋" (Karasumi Bridge) on the hot spring street is a great option. By participating in a dyeing experience (reservation required), you can create a unique piece of karasumi.
Nearby, the beautiful Zao mountain range and the emerald green crater lake known as "御釜" (Okama) can be found, along with a ranch where one can feel the blessings of nature, making it a great base for leisure travel.
