About Yoshinoyama Ropeway

Take the oldest cable car in Japan to see the most beautiful cherry blossoms.

Details

Yoshinoyama has been renowned for cherry blossom viewing since ancient times and is registered as a World Heritage site. In the early Showa period (1929), a cable car was built from the current Senbon-guchi Station to Yoshinoyama Station. Over the past 90 years since its operation began, the cable car has been a beloved means of transportation for tourists visiting Yoshinoyama. Thanks to meticulous maintenance of the cable car's pillars and exterior, this is the oldest cable car in Japan, and it still retains the appearance it had when it first opened. Access to the cable car station is also very convenient; the Kintetsu Railway's "Yoshino" Station is near the Yoshinoyama cable car's "Senbon-guchi" Station, and it takes just 3 minutes to reach the mountain by cable car. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the changing beauty of nature, including cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. There are approximately 30,000 cherry trees on Yoshinoyama, blooming in order from the lower Senbon, middle Senbon, upper Senbon, to the Oku-Senbon areas. The best viewing period is from early April to late April. Additionally, near the summit, you can visit "Kinpusen-ji," founded by the ascetic monk En no Gyoja, who is associated with the Shugendo (a Japanese Buddhist sect). The temple features many highlights, including the wooden structure Zao-do, which is second in scale only to the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji, the Nio-mon gate designated as a national treasure, and three main deities, each standing 7 meters tall. If you visit Nara during the cherry blossom or autumn foliage season, it's highly recommended to experience the charm of Yoshinoyama by taking a ride on Japan's oldest cable car.

Highlights
