🗺️ Yotsuya Arakicho Shopping Street

📝 Introduction

A street of izakayas that combines restaurants, izakayas, and small bars, suitable for adults.

📖 Details

The Yotsuya Arakicho district is located near the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line's "Yotsuya Sanchome" station. If you head east towards Shinjuku Avenue for about 100 meters after exiting the station, you'll find a gentle slope. At the bottom of the slope, you can see a series of quaint little restaurants and izakayas filled with nostalgic charm. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of this izakaya street is perfect for adults to dine or enjoy a drink. During the Edo period, this area was the residence of Matsudaira Katsuzumi, a feudal lord of Edo, which featured a Japanese garden surrounded by lush greenery, complete with a waterfall and a pond. Later, it was opened to the public as a scenic spot, attracting many restaurants and izakayas, becoming a bustling entertainment district known as Hanabi Alley. Today, this small alley still retains historical remnants that evoke the charm of the past. Among them is the "Saku no Ike," a pond where Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have washed his horsewhip while hunting, as well as a small shrine dedicated to Tsunomori.
