About Zenrin-ji (Yokokando)
The interior is rendered in a crimson hue, making it one of Kyoto's top destinations for autumn leaves.
Details
Eikando is widely known as the head temple of the Jodo sect's Nishiyama Zenrin-ji branch. In the 3rd year of the Jisho era (853), it was built by the disciple of Kukai, Shinsō, as a place for the Shingon sect. After the 7th generation Eikando took over in the 4th year of the Enkyu era (1072), it gradually transformed into a temple for the practice of Pure Land Buddhism.
Eikando is one of Kyoto's premier spots for viewing autumn leaves, earning the reputation of "Eikando of the Maple Leaves." The best time to enjoy the maple foliage is in mid-November, when approximately 3,000 large maple trees and Ibaraki maple trees turn a fiery red, painting the grounds in vibrant autumn colors. The historically significant and solemn buildings, along with unique structures like the Tahōtō pagoda located in the heart of the mountains, create a stunning backdrop against the brilliant red leaves. The large release pond in the center of the grounds is also surrounded by maple trees, offering a dreamlike view of the autumn leaves reflected on the water's surface. Besides autumn, the cool summer season also attracts visitors for its long period of green maple viewing.
The temple enshrines a statue of Amida Nyorai, known as "Looking Back Amida" due to its posture facing backward, and is deeply revered by the public. Additionally, it houses many temple treasures, including the nationally designated treasure "Silk Painting of Amida in the Mountains," which is exhibited every November.
