Details
The庄川峡 (Shōgawa Gorge) extends from the Gokayama area to the southern part of Toyama City. While exploring, visitors can enjoy the changing natural landscapes throughout the four seasons.
The庄川 (Shōgawa) is a first-class river originating from the mountainous regions of Gifu Prefecture and flows into Toyama Prefecture. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and passes through the Gokayama, Ainokura, and Suganuma gassho-zukuri villages, which are known for preserving Japan's original scenery, before finally emptying into Toyama Bay.
Among its attractions, the庄川峡 (Shōgawa Gorge), with its winding river flowing deep into the steep mountains, is a well-known scenic spot. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom; in summer, fresh greenery thrives; in autumn, the leaves turn red; and in winter, the landscape is covered in snow, allowing visitors to appreciate the distinct beauty of each season.
As a tourism hub for庄川峡 (Shōgawa Gorge), the庄川水紀念公園 (Shōgawa Water Memorial Park) features foot baths with viewing platforms, a museum, dining options, and souvenir shops. There are hiking trails along the riverbank where visitors can immerse themselves in the natural scenery while enjoying a leisurely stroll.
One of the most popular activities is taking a庄川遊覽船 (Shōgawa sightseeing boat) to view the magnificent scenery of the gorge from the water. The round trip from the pier near the Komaki Dam to the Omaki Onsen takes about one hour, while a shorter trip that turns back at Nagasaki Bridge takes approximately 25 minutes, allowing guests to fully enjoy the breathtaking views.
