Known for its "Aizu Okuzashiki," Higashiyama Onsen is said to have been discovered about 1,300 years ago when the monk Gyoki was guided here by a three-legged crow. It represents a historic hot spring town in Fukushima Prefecture. Located about 15 minutes by car from Aizuwakamatsu City, it is close to the bustling urban area yet surrounded by rich nature, making it a beloved quiet hot spring destination where people can forget the noise of the city.
The water quality is primarily a colorless and transparent sulfate spring, which is effective for treating cuts, neuralgia, skin diseases, and more. In the past, it was also known as "Tennenji no Yu" and served as a retreat for the Aizu domain. Along the river flowing beside the hot spring street, many inns from the Aizu domain era, designated as national cultural properties, have been preserved, exuding a rich hot spring atmosphere.
Since ancient times, Higashiyama Onsen has been frequented by samurai generals such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Hijikata Toshizo for healing their injuries. It is also favored by cultural figures, and the area has preserved monuments commemorating those who stayed here, including the poet Yosano Akiko and the painter Takehisa Yumeji, known for his beautiful women paintings.
