About Amakusa Gokyo (Pearl Line)

The five bridges connecting the main island and the Amakusa Islands are popular scenic drives.

Details

The "Amakusa Gokyo" was opened in Showa 41 (1966) and spans a total length of 12 kilometers. It includes the "Tenmon Bridge" connecting the mainland at Mukae and Oyano Island, the "Oyano Bridge" connecting Oyano Island and Nagashima, the "Nakanohashi" connecting Nagashima and Oike Island, the "Maeshima Bridge" connecting Oike Island and Maeshima, and the "Matsushima Bridge" connecting Maeshima and Amakusa Island. These five bridges allow for driving from the Kyushu mainland to the Amakusa Islands. Due to the local popularity of pearl farming, it is also nicknamed the "Amakusa Pearl Line." The Amakusa Islands, where the bridges are located, are part of the "Unzen-Amakusa National Park," providing a scenic route to enjoy the magnificent views of nature, which is very popular among tourists. Near each bridge, there are observation decks, Takamatsu Mountain, and Senkanzan, where visitors can enjoy the charming multi-island seascape unique to Amakusa, including the view from the Takamatsu Mountain observation deck, which is listed among the "One Hundred Selected Sunsets of Japan." The scenery, bathed in a layer of orange sunset, is incredibly beautiful.

Highlights

Five bridges connect Kyushu mainland with the Amakusa Islands. The scenic routes located within the "Unzen-Amakusa National Park" offer beautiful views. The scenery from the observation decks near each bridge is particularly enchanting.
