About Asukayama Park (飛鳥山公園)
One of Tokyo's leading cherry blossom viewing spots.
Details
About 300 years ago, the shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune planted cherry blossom trees here and opened the area to the public. It is one of the earliest parks in Japan to be accessible to the general public. Now, it stands as one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo, with approximately 600 cherry blossom trees in the park. Additionally, there are many flowers and trees such as hydrangeas (繡球花) and azaleas (杜鵑花).
Near the park, there is "Asukayama Park Cable Car," which takes about two minutes to reach the park's high ground from "Oji Station." The vehicle resembles a snail, which is why it has the nickname "Snail Train." It is free for anyone, including those in wheelchairs or with strollers, to ride.
Furthermore, there are displays of a real SL steam locomotive and streetcar (都電列車) that were used in the past, along with several amusement facilities, ensuring that both adults and children can have a great time.
Highlights
In the park, there is the Kitaku Bird Mountain Museum (北区飛鳥山博物館), the Paper Museum (紙の博物館), and the Shibusawa Historical Museum (渋澤歴史館), which requires an entrance fee. During cherry blossom season, there are illuminated night viewings where you can enjoy the enchanting night sakura. The park also features a display of a real SL steam train and streetcars used in the past. There are amusement facilities, along with areas where kids can play barefoot in the water, making it a favorite spot for children.
