About Ayano Teruha Great Suspension Bridge

In the UNESCO-recognized ecological park, fully enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature.

Details

The Ayano Teruha Great Suspension Bridge is a representative attraction in Ayacho, Miyazaki Prefecture. In 2012, Ayacho was registered as an ecological park by UNESCO. The reason for this registration is the preservation of a large area of Teruha forest (i.e., evergreen broadleaf forest), which serves as a habitat for many species endemic to Japan, as well as the local government's commitment to regional revitalization measures that coexist with nature. The Ayano Teruha Great Suspension Bridge is located in the Teruha forest area designated as part of the Kyushu Chuo Mountain National Park and is one of the largest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world. Visitors can enjoy the natural scenery of the Ayagawa Gorge from here. Ayacho is a town located in the central-western part of Miyazaki Prefecture, boasting the largest area of Teruha forest in Japan. However, in the 1960s, it was included in the national forest logging plan. The Ayacho Town Council passed a resolution opposing the logging, and through efforts such as petitions to the national government, the logging plan was ultimately canceled. Subsequently, the local government collaborated with the community to implement a series of measures to protect forest resources, one of which was the construction of this significant suspension bridge. In front of the suspension bridge is the Teruha Forest Cultural Center, where it is recommended to start your visit to learn about broadleaf forests and forest biodiversity. On the opposite side of the suspension bridge, there is a forest walking trail approximately 2 kilometers long, where visitors can enjoy about 40 minutes of forest bathing along the path. Additionally, there are guided tours lasting around 2 hours and 30 minutes, so it's worth following a guide for an in-depth travel experience with expansive views.

Highlights

The suspension bridge is 142 meters high and 250 meters long. It sways while crossing, so those with acrophobia should take note. Enjoy the natural scenery that has been registered as an ecological park by UNESCO. You can stroll through the evergreen forest designated as a national park while enjoying a forest bath.
