About Bank of Japan Head Office Main Building
Visit the interior of the Bank of Japan building, designated as an important cultural property of the nation.
Details
The Bank of Japan is Japan's central bank, responsible for issuing currency. The main building, completed in the 29th year of the Meiji era (1896), was designed by the renowned modern architect Kingo Tatsuno, who also created the Marunouchi Station building of Tokyo Station. It has excellent seismic resistance and did not collapse during the Great Kanto Earthquake. The structure, made of stone and brick, features a classical style characterized by a central dome and massive columns, and it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The Bank of Japan's head office conducts guided tours led by tour guides, allowing visitors to explore this precious building. Visitors can see the former business area, the underground vault, and exhibition rooms on the first and second floors (reservations required in advance).
The tour lasts about 60 minutes, with three sessions held each day (four sessions on Tuesdays). Reservations can be made on the official website up to 90 days in advance. If time permits, it is recommended to also visit the adjacent Currency Museum (free admission).
