About Blood Pond Hell
In the hellish, blood-red pool, experience the wonders and mysteries of nature.
Details
The "hot mud (volcanic mud)" that is formed from chemical reactions in high temperature and high pressure underground layers erupts to the surface, accumulating in pools and presenting a chilling sight that has been referred to as "hell" since ancient times. The Blood Pond Hell, covering an area of 1,300 square meters, was formed 1,300 years ago. Today, the surrounding planning and safety measures are well established, making it one of Beppu's famous tourist attractions.
The hot mud contains a large amount of iron oxide, magnesium oxide, and other substances, giving it a bright red color reminiscent of a pool of blood. The boiling and churning hot mud, along with the rising steam, creates a scene akin to a depiction of hell, and getting close to observe it surely allows one to feel the grandeur and mystery of nature's energy.
Within the area, there is a restaurant called "Gokurakutei." Inspired by the Blood Pond Hell, it offers unique dishes such as "Hell Gokuraku Curry," made with a large amount of tomato paste, and bright red ice cream made from beetroot, which are must-tries that can only be found here.
The shop exclusively sells "Blood Pond Ointment," made from the hot mud that flows from the Blood Pond Hell. This traditional skin ointment, which has been passed down since the Meiji era, is effective for frostbite, burns, and cracked skin, and is a long-time favorite among many residents of Ōita Prefecture.
