About Cape Kamoi
The breathtaking cape surrounded by the 300-degree view of the deep blue sea of Shakotan, with its clear azure waters.
Details
Cape Kamui is a slender cape extending from the northwest part of the Shakotan Peninsula into the Sea of Japan, and it is part of the "Shin-Yuzawa (Niseko) Shakotan Otaru Coast National Park." The distance from the parking lot to the tip of the cape is about 770 meters, and it takes approximately 20 minutes to walk along the undulating trail. The natural scenery visible along the way, along with the boundless view of the crystal-clear blue sea known as Shakotan Blue, is truly breathtaking. At the very tip of the cape, there are Kamui Rock and the Kamui Cape Lighthouse, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding horizon in a 300-degree arc.
There is an ancient legend associated with Kamui Rock, which tells of Kalenka, the daughter of a local leader in Hidaka, who fell in love with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. After failing to follow him, she took her own life by drowning in the sea. As a result, it was believed that any ship carrying women passing through the nearby waters would surely capsize, leading to a prohibition on women entering the area until the early Meiji period. The entrance gate of the trail is called the "Women’s Forbidden Gate," and the trail itself is referred to as "Kalenka Path."
Along the trail of Cape Kamui, seasonal flowers such as Ezo windflower, Ezo daylily, and beach pear blossom, bloom abundantly, making the surrounding area a treasure trove of various plants.
