About Cape Nozaki
The beautiful sunset at the edge of Japan touches the heart!
Details
Wakkanai City in Hokkaido is located at the edge of Japan. Prominent on the westernmost side of the Soya Strait is Cape Noshappu. The name originates from the Ainu language "not-syam," meaning "a cape that protrudes like a chin" and "a place where waves crash."
To the west is the famous Mount Rishiri, and to the east is Rebun Island, known as the "Island of Flowers." To the north, one can see the shadow of Sakhalin Island. The area is also renowned for its beautiful sunsets, where the sun gradually sinks into the ocean, turning it a vibrant orange-red, creating a breathtaking scene. The silhouette of Rishiri Island that appears at this time adds to the charm.
There are many attractions nearby, including the Wakkanai Lighthouse, which stands at 42.7 meters tall and is known as the second tallest lighthouse in Japan. It showcases astronomical phenomena and Antarctic observation data, and features a planetarium at the "Youth Science Museum." Additionally, there is the "Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium," the northernmost aquarium in Japan. In the mornings from July to August, one can witness the summer scenery of harvesting Rishiri kelp.
