About Chikubushima
It is said to be an island inhabited by deities, deeply revered by people.
Details
Chikubushima is located in the northern part of Lake Biwa, about 6 km from the shore, and is a small island with a circumference of approximately 2 km. It is home to Hōgon-ji, one of Japan's three Benzaiten temples, and Tsukubusuma Shrine.
In addition to the temples and shrines, there are many historically valuable buildings preserved here. For example, the "Karamon" gate of Hōgon-ji, which is said to be the only remnant of Osaka Castle and was designated as a national treasure, completed its restoration in 2020; the "Kannon-dō," which is an important cultural property; and the "Three-Story Pagoda," which was restored in 2000 after a gap of 350 years, among others.
When visiting Chikubushima, it is recommended to visit the "Tsukubusuma Shrine" on the island and try the "Tōki" challenge. This involves writing a wish on a clay vessel and throwing it towards the Miyazaki Torii that stands on the surface of the lake. It is said that if the thrown vessel successfully passes through the torii, the wish will be granted.
To reach Chikubushima, you can take the "Chikubushima Sightseeing Boat" operated by the Biwa Lake Ferry. Depending on your travel plans, you can choose from three routes: the Kyozu Route, Nagahama Route, and the Biwa Lake Cross Route.
Highlights
One of Japan's three Benzaiten, Hōgan-ji Temple, and Tsukubusuma Shrine are located here. This is a very popular energy spot in Shiga Prefecture. You can challenge yourself with the "Tōkaki" (throwing earthenware). You can choose from three routes to select a ferry port that fits your travel itinerary.
