🗺️ Chikuwari Falls
🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
Known as the "Eastern Niagara Falls," it offers a spectacular view of both the magnificent waterfall and the beautiful valley.
📖 Details
Typically, when viewing waterfalls, one looks up from below, gazing at the cascading water. However, the Fukuroda Falls is unique, allowing visitors to overlook the waterfall from above, experiencing the grandeur and astonishing power of nature, which is a rare natural spectacle in Japan. The waterfall has a drop of 7 meters and a width of 30 meters, earning it the nickname "Little Niagara of the East." The mighty river rushes between massive rocks, creating a thunderous roar and splashing waves, making for a spectacular sight.
The formation of this unique terrain was triggered by a volcanic eruption over 200,000 years ago. The volcanic activity blocked the river and caused the accumulation of tuff. Over time, the river that flows over the waterfall has repeatedly eroded the tuff, creating the Fukuroda Gorge. The gorge retreats an average of 7.5 centimeters each year, meaning that since the Fukuroda Falls was born 10,000 years ago, it has receded 750 meters. The Fukuroda Falls is a magnificent wonder created by the artistry of nature over a long period. It frequently appears in Japanese television dramas and has recently gained attention as an energy spot.
Surrounding the waterfall is a well-maintained walking path, allowing visitors to leisurely stroll while closely admiring the beautiful scenery of Fukuroda Gorge. Additionally, one can conveniently visit nearby attractions such as Fukakubo Bridge and Ukishima Kannon Temple.
⭐ Highlights
From late April to early May each year, the snow melts and the water volume increases. This is the time when you can enjoy the most magnificent waterfall scenery of the year.
The waterfall was designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan in 1936 and was selected as one of the "One Hundred Waterfalls of Japan" in 1990.
It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to walk around the trail.
The trail is closed during the winter season from mid-December to late March.
The ground in the valley is uneven and slippery, so it is recommended to wear sports shoes or non-slip shoes.
