About Chishui Viewing Square
Enjoy the spectacular view of Sakurajima from the observation deck and the grassy square!
Details
The Chishui Viewing Square was renovated as the venue for the overnight concert held in 2004 by the famous Japanese singer Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi. It not only offers a panoramic view of the expansive Sakurajima but also overlooks the city of Kagoshima behind Kinkowan Bay, making it a very popular sightseeing spot.
Nearby the square, there are remnants of massive volcanic lava from an eruption that occurred about a century ago, showcasing the unique landscape of Sakurajima everywhere. The statue on the right side of the square's entrance is considered a local symbol. This work, named "Scream Portrait," was designed and created by sculptor Hiroshi Oose, commemorating the overnight concert, and is made from layers of Sakurajima lava that have been cut and stacked. Many fans visit specifically to see this moving statue.
Highlights
The area of approximately 17,000 square meters features an observation deck and a grassy plaza. It offers a view of Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and the city of Kagoshima. The "Scream Portrait," made from stacked and cut lava from Sakurajima, is the symbol of the plaza.
