About Choshi Ocean Research Institute Choshi Dolphin Team
Experience the magnificent nature by watching dolphins and whales off the coast of Choshi.
Details
The waters off Choshi, where the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents intersect, create a rich fishing ground and a natural gathering place for wild dolphins and whales. The Choshi Ocean Research Institute, located next to Choshi Beach, organizes dolphin and whale watching tours throughout the year.
The marine life seen during these tours varies by season. On the dolphin watching tours that navigate 30 kilometers offshore, participants can see dolphins swimming close to the boat or leaping out of the water. Whales, which are rarely seen outside of the islands, are also breathtaking to observe. If luck is on your side, in spring, you might see between 2,000 and 5,000 dolphins, while in autumn, around 50 whales can be spotted. For travelers with children, it is recommended to join the coastal dolphin watching tours suitable for those aged three and older, with a trip duration of about 1 to 1.5 hours.
In addition to the dolphin tours, there are also sunset cruises on weekends and public holidays that offer stunning views of the natural monument, Byobugaura, and the setting sun. The New Year's Day sunrise cruise is also quite popular.
