About Chūson-ji

The national treasure "Golden Hall" with its resplendent gold and the famous temple with beautiful lotus scenery.

Details

Chūson-ji was founded in the year 850 (the 3rd year of the Kachō era) and houses over 3,000 national treasures and important cultural properties. It has now been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The purpose of establishing this temple was to honor the spirits of those who lost their lives in the long-standing conflicts in the Tōhoku region, regardless of friend or foe, and to convey the strong desire of the people for peace. Within the temple grounds, there are many buildings, among which the most noteworthy is the "Konjiki-dō" (Golden Hall). This hall and its Buddha statues radiate a golden light, resembling a beautifully elegant piece of art. In the "Fudō-dō," there is a statue of a Buddha that is said to help people correct their mistakes. The expression on the statue's face appears somewhat stern, but it is believed to be very effective for prayers concerning family safety, quick recovery from illness, passing exams, and traffic safety. Additionally, there are many other attractions worth seeing, such as the "Hondō" (Main Hall), which frequently hosts various Buddhist ceremonies, and the "Tsukimi-zaka" (Moon Viewing Slope) approach. The road along "Tsukimi-zaka" is lined with cedar trees that are over 300 years old.

Highlights

The collection includes over 3,000 national treasures and important cultural properties. The "Golden Hall," designated as a national treasure, shines brilliantly with gold leaf applied lavishly both inside and out (photography is prohibited in the hall). It is a famous spot for viewing the "Chuson-ji Lotus," with the best time for viewing being early mornings from July to mid-August each year. Along the "Tsukimi-zaka" approach within the grounds, there are cedar trees over 300 years old planted on both sides. The temple has many Buddha halls, so it is recommended to prepare enough offerings in advance.
