Opened in 1973, the bridge connects Mojiko in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, with Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This suspension bridge, which spans the Kanmon Straits, has a total length of 1,068 meters and was the longest suspension bridge in the Orient at the time of its opening. The Kanmon Bridge is part of the expressway, linking the Mojiko interchange in Kitakyushu with the Shimonoseki interchange in Shimonoseki City, and is exclusively for vehicle traffic (excluding vehicles not permitted on expressways).
The Kanmon Bridge is also a well-known scenic spot, with its gray-green structure elegantly blending into the surrounding environment. Walking along the "MEKARI Tide Viewing Path" on the Mojiko side, one can gaze up at the massive bridge piers, experiencing the impressive sight up close. Additionally, the bridge can be viewed from different angles at the MEKARI Second Observation Deck or from a ferry crossing the Kanmon Straits.
The Kanmon Bridge features nighttime illumination year-round, and the enchanting night view is not to be missed.
*Vehicles not permitted on expressways: Mini cars, ordinary motorcycles with an engine displacement of 125cc or less, and motorcycles are not allowed on expressways. Furthermore, vehicles that cannot travel over 50 kilometers due to structural factors, or vehicles that cannot maintain a speed of over 50 kilometers per hour because they are towing other vehicles (with the exception of vehicles equipped with towing devices and those being towed), are also prohibited from traveling on expressways.
