About Cypress Tree Boulevard (Shiga Prefecture)
On the 2.4-kilometer-long road, approximately 500 Metasequoia trees are planted on both sides. It is an excellent spot for taking photos and checking in.
Details
The Water Cypress Avenue is located on the Koaraji Makinozawa Line in Shiga Prefecture. Along the 2.4-kilometer stretch of road, approximately 500 Water Cypress trees are planted on both sides. This is a straight road leading to the Makino Plateau, where the distant mountains of the Yasaka Range complement the Water Cypress Avenue, creating a stunning and magnificent landscape.
Since 1981, the Makino Town Agricultural Association has been planting Water Cypress trees along the road, and later collaborated with local residents to cultivate and gradually expand the planting area, resulting in the grand scale and beautiful scenery of the Water Cypress Avenue.
The Water Cypress is a deciduous tree native to China, known in Japanese as 曙杉 (Asakusugi). Due to its shape resembling that of the giant Sequoia, which can grow up to 115 meters tall, it is called Water Cypress.
The Water Cypress Avenue offers different beautiful views in each season. In spring, the tender buds emerge; in summer, the green trees provide shade; in autumn, the maple leaves turn red; and in winter, the avenue covered in ice and snow exudes a romantic and mysterious atmosphere. In 1994, the Water Cypress Avenue was selected as one of the "New 100 Scenic Streets of Japan."
