About Daibonzan Eigenji
Kansai's top destination for autumn leaves, dedicated to the practice of Zen meditation and praying for world peace for many years.
Details
Eiyō-ji is the head temple of the Eiyō-ji sect of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. Since its construction in 1361, it has long been dedicated to the practice of zazen (seated meditation) and praying for peace in the world. It is said that in ancient times, there were as many as two thousand monks practicing the Buddhist path here, and it has 127 branch temples across the country.
The main deity is Kannon (観世音菩薩), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and it is believed that praying to Kannon can lead to the successful birth of children, which is why it is also referred to as "Shikei Kannon" (世繼観音), earning deep respect from the public. Additionally, along the approach to the temple, there are stone statues of the Sixteen Arhats and the seated statue of Jishitsu (寂室和尚), which is designated as an important cultural property by the government, showcasing treasures that reflect the historical significance of the temple.
The temple grounds, including the approach, are home to various species of trees such as mountain maples, maples, ginkgoes, and chicken-foot maples. In autumn, these trees turn a fiery red, offering a breathtaking view. This area is also one of the top spots in Kansai for viewing autumn leaves. Around November, nighttime illuminations are held during the leaf-viewing season, and visitors can participate in various activities, including visiting the second floor of the normally closed mountain gate for worship. The temple, usually quiet and serene, becomes lively with numerous tourists from both domestic and international locations.
Moreover, the fresh green maple leaves that emerge in early summer are also worth seeing. They sway in the wind, full of vibrant life, and possess a beauty that rivals the autumn foliage. After purifying the soul through worship at Eiyō-ji, it is recommended to extend your journey outward and visit the nostalgic area known as Oku Eiyō-ji (奥永源寺).
