About Dazaifu Tenmangu

The shrine dedicated to the god of learning, "Sugawara no Michizane," is also the head shrine of the 10,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan.

Details

Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head shrine of the 10,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan, with its main deity being Sugawara no Michizane, one of the three great deities. Sugawara no Michizane was falsely accused by political rivals and exiled from Kyoto to what was then Dazaifu. Shortly after, he passed away here and was buried locally, with the main shrine built above his grave. For over 1,100 years, it has been regarded as a sacred site of Tenjin worship. Sugawara no Michizane was a talented scholar, writer, and outstanding politician, which is why he is revered by the Japanese as the god of learning. Many students, including those from abroad, visit this shrine to pray for success in their exams. The shrine grounds are vast and feature many attractions, including the "Sacred Cow Statue," "Taiko Bridge," "Treasure Hall," and various artistic activities organized under the "Dazaifu Tenmangu Art Project" aimed at preserving cultural heritage. Additionally, visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers such as plum blossoms throughout the year. *The important cultural property "Main Hall" is undergoing extensive renovations for the first time in 124 years. During the three-year renovation period (until 2026), worship can be conducted at a specially designated temporary hall.*
