📖 Details

Lake Tokura is a representative festival of Yamagata and also the birthplace of one of the four major festivals in Tohoku, the Hanagasa Matsuri. It is an artificial lake built during the Taisho era. It is said that the "Hanagasa Dance" originated from the earth-tamping songs sung by people during the construction work. In 2010, Lake Tokura was selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as one of the "Top 100 Reservoirs." Covering approximately 230 hectares, Lake Tokura is home to many freshwater fish. In winter, white geese come to spend the season, offering many charming natural landscapes. Spring is particularly popular for cherry blossom viewing, with 200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees blooming along the lakeside. The reflection of the cherry blossoms on the lake is breathtakingly beautiful. Every year in May, the "Tokura Lake Festival" is held, where visitors can enjoy lively festivities and beautiful cherry blossoms. It is recommended to take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside to appreciate the beauty of the lake and the cherry blossoms together. There are many rich facilities around Lake Tokura, including a campground, a "Children's Square" with play equipment, a day-use hot spring, and a ground golf course.
