About Dragon Head Waterfall
One of the three famous waterfalls in 奥日光 (Oku-Nikko). It is named because the shape of the waterfall resembles the head of a dragon.
Details
Ryutō Falls is located in Tochigi Prefecture's Yukawa, where the river flows into Lake Chūzenji after passing through the battlefield plains. This waterfall is formed from lava created during the eruption of Mount Nantai. The sight of the 210-meter-long water flow cascading down the approximately 10-meter-wide stepped rock layers is truly spectacular. It is said that the waterfall is divided into two streams by a large rock near the plunge pool, resembling a dragon's head, hence the name Ryutō Falls.
The area around Ryutō Falls is filled with Tōkoku Mitsuba Azaleas, and the best viewing period is from May to June when the purple-red flowers are particularly charming. Starting from late September, it transforms into a popular destination for autumn foliage, reputed to be one of the earliest places in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, to see the red leaves. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of maple trees and other species like the Japanese Linden creating a vibrant tapestry of colors. A must-see is the view of the plunge pool from the observation deck, where the red and yellow maple leaves contrast beautifully with the clear waterfall, creating a breathtaking sight.
Additionally, in winter, one can witness the spectacular sight of the frozen ice falls. The waterfall is very close to the bus stop, making transportation very convenient.
Highlights
Along with the Kegon Falls and the Yumoto Falls, it is known as one of the "Three Great Falls of Oku-Nikko." During the lush spring and summer, you can see the Tokugawa azalea, and in autumn, you can enjoy the maple leaves. There is a viewing platform directly in front of the waterfall. To view the falls, you need to walk along a long staircase, so it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes when visiting.
