About Dragon King Gorge
The grandeur of the magnificent valley, woven together by奇岩 (strange rocks), 巨石 (giant stones), and 清流 (clear streams), is truly breathtaking.
Details
The hot spring town, nestled at the confluence of rivers between Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen, features a 3-kilometer-long gorge. This landscape was shaped by volcanic rock that erupted from underwater volcanic activity 22 million years ago, gradually eroded by the waters of the Kinugawa River into its current form. True to its name, Ryūō Gorge resembles a dragon soaring through the valley, captivating every visitor.
The approximately 3-kilometer-long Ryūō Gorge is generally divided into three areas: "Hakuryū Gorge," characterized by white flowstone, "Seiryū Gorge," formed by green tuff with uniquely shaped rocks, and "Jiryū Gorge," made of purple andesite. Along the well-maintained walking trails, visitors can find stunning attractions such as "Nijimi Falls," where vibrant rainbows appear on clear days, and the mysteriously shaped "Kameana" (Turtle Cave). Upon exiting the station, one can immediately see the majestic boulders, strange rocks, and the clear river flowing through, showcasing the dynamic beauty of the gorge crafted by nature.
With lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes in winter, the area reveals different scenery throughout the seasons, ensuring that visitors will discover new beauty no matter when they visit.
