About Drifting Post Office
The works of the Setouchi International Art Festival were created by contemporary artist Sayaka Kubota.
Details
As a participating work in the 2nd Setouchi International Art Triennale, the "Drifting Post Office" officially opened to the public in 2013, attracting many visitors from both domestic and international locations, and becoming a hot topic at the time.
The "Drifting Post Office" is an art installation created by contemporary artist Sayaka Kubota, centered around the theme of indoor furnishings. She transformed the old Awashima Post Office, built over 50 years ago, into a post office specifically for handling letters with unclear recipient addresses, becoming a sanctuary for many people's emotions and a place of solace. Sayaka Kubota invited Mr. Nakata, a former postmaster of the Awashima Post Office, to serve as the postmaster of the "Drifting Post Office," while she took on the role of postal staff.
If one writes down deep-seated emotions or desires on a postcard or letter, addresses it to "Drifting Post Office," and drops it into the mailbox, the Drifting Post Office will act as a "temporary recipient," keeping the letters in the "drifting mailbox." The Drifting Post Office continues to receive postcards from across the country, expressing the wish to convey heartfelt sentiments to someone. The post office is only open on Saturdays, and anyone can come here to read postcards from various places.
