About Fudoin (Mount Koya)
A historic temple and lodging with the principal deity being the statue of Fudō Myōō (Secret Buddha) carved by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai.
Details
Founded in 907 by the high monk Jikō, this temple is dedicated to the statue of Fudō Myōō (a secret Buddha) carved by the great master Kōbō Daishi Kūkai. In addition to Fudō Myōō, the main hall also houses statues of Nichirin Daishi and the boat-shaped nameplate of Hachiman Bodhisattva, with daily offerings performed.
The location for enjoying shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) in the lodging facilities is the old study hall or the kitchen. The old study hall is a structure from the Azuchi-Momoyama period and has a long history in Koyasan, being designated as a cultural asset of Wakayama along with the kitchen.
Within the temple grounds, there are numerous Buddhist art pieces, among which the dry landscape garden "Kissen-tei," designed by Mirei Shigemori, is highly praised for its beautiful scenery. The garden is planted with a variety of plants that showcase different appearances with the changing seasons, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of seasonal transitions throughout the year.
