🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
Through life-sized models such as a nagaya (row house), the streetscape and daily life of Fukagawa Saga-cho in Edo around 1840 are recreated.
📖 Details
The exhibition hall of the 江東區深川江戶資料館 (Koto Ward Fukagawa Edo Museum) features a space that connects the first and second floors. Here, the streetscape of 江戶深川佐賀町 (Edo Fukagawa Saga Town) around the year 1840 is reproduced with life-sized backdrops and models.
Along the main street, various life-sized models recreate the street scenes of that era, including a fertilizer wholesale shop, an inn offering boat rentals for sightseeing, and white-walled warehouses. In the square, where the 見火樓 (Akanebashi Fire Watch Tower) stands, there is a modern café called 水茶屋 (Mizuchaya), featuring stalls selling "Edo-period fast food" such as tempura and soba noodles. Turning into the narrow alleys, visitors can see the old streetscape lined with traditional residences called 長屋 (Nagaya), arranged according to the household members, occupations, and ages of the residents. The space occupied, daily necessities, and furnishings of each home differ according to these details.
Visitors can enter the models of the shops and 長屋 (Nagaya) for a closer look, and they can personally experience the way of life of Japanese people in the past by interacting with the daily use items and exhibits. The exhibition hall utilizes sound and lighting effects to recreate the passage of time from morning to night, providing an immersive experience akin to traveling through time. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum frequently hosts special themed exhibitions centered around "浮世絵" (Ukiyo-e), "マンガ" (Manga), and "小説" (Novels). On the first Saturday of every month, the event "和服DE江戸町" (Kimono at Edo Town) allows visitors to rent and wear kimonos while exploring the museum.
