About Fukuoka City Museum
A museum that provides insight into the history of Fukuoka. You can see the gold seal inscribed with "漢倭奴國王印" (Han-Wa-Nu-Koku-Ō-In) that appears in Japanese textbooks.
Details
The Fukuoka City Museum is located in the seaside Momochi area. To the north is Fukuoka Tower, and on the eastern side across the river are buildings such as the PayPay Dome, making it one of Fukuoka's tourist attractions. The museum opened to the public in 1990 as a cultural hub for researching and introducing local history and folklore.
The permanent exhibition is themed "Fukuoka: A City and Its People Living in Asia," presenting Fukuoka's history and folklore from various perspectives. The entire exhibition hall is divided into 11 sections, with the first section introducing the national treasure, the "King of Wa's Gold Seal" (漢倭奴國王印). According to the Chinese historical text "Book of the Later Han" (後漢書), in the year 57 AD, Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty granted the "gold seal" and "ribbons" to the envoy of "Wano-kuni." It is speculated that this "Wano-kuni" existed approximately in the coastal area of Hakata Bay, where modern-day Fukuoka City is located. The other 10 sections feature various easily understandable exhibits that introduce Fukuoka's history and the daily lives and changes of its people throughout different eras.
The theme of the 11th section is "Hakata Gion Yamakasa." In addition to viewing the specially made float for the museum, "Military Strategist Kuroda Kanbei's Achievement," visitors can also appreciate paintings from the Edo period and see models depicting life during the Meiji era.
In the "Experiential Learning Room," visitors can explore and touch toys, musical instruments, clothing, and daily necessities from various parts of Asia. The museum also features a souvenir shop and a café, where visitors can relax or purchase memorabilia after their visit.
