📖 Details
The Furudate Saku Ruins (払田柵跡) are located in the Senboku Plain and are remnants of a fortification built in the early Heian period. This wooden enclosure was constructed to govern the Emishi people living in the Tohoku region, but it has not been documented in ancient texts, and its name remains unknown, making it an enigmatic site to this day.
During the Meiji period, a large quantity of Akita cedar wood, measuring 30 cubic centimeters and approximately 3.6 meters in length, was excavated. Subsequent investigations revealed the presence of a fence in the hilly area. The wooden enclosure, known as the outer fence, forms an oval shape with a total length of about 3,600 meters and features entrances on the east, west, south, and north sides. In the center, remnants of what is believed to be the administrative building of that time were also discovered. Numerous artifacts, including wooden tablets, lacquered paper documents, and ink-written pottery, were unearthed, providing valuable insights into the historical context of the period.
Currently, part of the outer fence and the southern gate of the outer fence, which stands 9.7 meters high, have been restored. The Furudate Saku Ruins are also introduced through visual presentations at the comprehensive consultation center, conveying the historical romance to the present day.
