🗺️ Hachigata Castle Ruins

📝 Introduction

A must-see for history enthusiasts! The ruins of castles in the Kanto region that were virtually impregnable during the Warring States period.

📖 Details

Hachigata Castle is located on a cliff between the Arakawa and Fukazawa rivers in Yoshimi Town, Saitama Prefecture. It was built in 1476 by Nagao Kageharu, a retainer of the Kanto Kanrei Uesugi clan. The castle is situated on a crucial transportation route to Joshu and Shinshu, and its position on the steep cliffs between the rivers makes it a natural fortress. As an impregnable stronghold, it successfully repelled fierce attacks from Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. Hachigata Castle is the largest castle in the Kanto region and is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles, representing the Sengoku period. Currently, the castle ruins have been developed and are open to the public as "Hachigata Castle Park." The park retains the original appearance of relics such as moats and field fortifications, and has restored structures from the period, including excavated stone field fortifications, a square gate, stone steps, and a garden pond. Additionally, some areas within the inner grounds still preserve the old stone walls. It is a popular spot where visitors can feel the historical atmosphere of the Sengoku period. The park also features the "Hachigata Castle History Museum," where visitors can learn about the history of Hachigata Castle through videos. One of the most striking exhibits is a three-dimensional perspective model that perfectly recreates the castle as it was at that time. Furthermore, a free guided tour of the castle ruins conducted by volunteer guides is also highly recommended (reservation required in advance).
