Hakkoda Ice Trees

✨ Highlights

Mount Hakkoda is a popular destination for seasonal recreational activities year-round. You can also see the winter-exclusive "Juhyo" (frost-covered trees) scenery. The daytime temperatures in the snow-covered mountains are relatively low, so please make sure to prepare adequately for the cold. If you want to warm up your chilly body, consider taking advantage of the restaurants at the foot of the mountain. It takes about 10 minutes to reach the summit by the Hakkoda Ropeway.

🌸 Introduction

Surrounded by nature, it creates a magnificent and powerful silver-white world.

📜 Content

Mount Hakkoda, centered around its highest peak, Mount Odake at 1,584 meters, is a volcanic group composed of 18 volcanoes and is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The vast high-altitude wetlands and the breathtaking panoramic views from the summit are truly awe-inspiring. The area is also widely known for its skiing and hiking routes, making it a year-round tourist destination. The "frosted trees" formed in winter are a must-see attraction. Water molecules from fog and snow accumulate and freeze on the Abies mariesii (white-fir), causing the trees to take on increasingly massive shapes. This, combined with the unique landscape created by the accumulation of snowfall, has earned them the nickname "snow monsters." Visitors can explore this silver world, crafted by nature and filled with artistic beauty. The best time to enjoy the scenery is in February. In the winter, the mountains are covered in deep snow, and daytime temperatures drop below freezing, so be sure to prepare warm clothing such as gloves and thick jackets before heading out. If the cold becomes unbearable, consider visiting a restaurant at the foot of the mountain to warm up. Additionally, taking the Hakkoda Ropeway to the summit allows you to enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the vast expanse of "frosted trees."
