About Hakodate Port, Hakodate Bay Area (Tsugaru Strait Ferry Hakodate Terminal)

Stroll through the Bay Area and experience the vintage charm and exotic atmosphere of the 19th century.

Details

Hakodate Port (Hakodate Bay Area) has been a key area for the development of Hakodate since it opened to trade in the 6th year of the Ansei era (1859). As one of the earliest ports to open in Japan, it has made significant contributions to Hakodate's development as a tourist city. The deep bay and dynamic scenery of Mount Hakodate, along with the modern atmosphere of the 19th century and the exotic streets, make it photogenic from every angle. The docks at Hakodate Port feature wooden walkways suitable for leisurely strolls and "heart-shaped decorative art," making it a popular photo spot. In the cafeteria "Kaikyō Biyori" within the facilities, you can enjoy daily changing set meals made with local ingredients from southern Hokkaido. There is also a souvenir shop "GIFT SHOP Rera," and "SEA Chan," which sells exclusive bento boxes and other products, both highly recommended for browsing. Additionally, the Hakodate Bay Area is home to the "Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse," transformed from warehouses dating back to the time of opening, and buildings like the "Hakodate Meiji-kan," which was remodeled from a post office during the Meiji era, making it a very popular place for walking.
