About Hide and Seek Alley

Numerous famous restaurants line the streets, filled with the charm of the Hualiu Street alleys.

Details

Located in the central area of Kagurazaka, which connects Kagurazaka Station and Iidabashi Station, "Kagurazaka" is a popular tourist destination in Shinjuku with a unique style, resembling a hidden retreat. As you turn off the main road into the alley known as "Yokochō," you will find a variety of renowned establishments, including Japanese, Italian, French, and Chinese restaurants, amidst the original scenery of Japan, characterized by stone pavements and black walls surrounding traditional ryotei (Japanese restaurants) and old houses. This area, planned during the Edo period, nurtures a blend of civilization and modern fashion, creating a fascinating space where Japanese and multicultural influences intertwine. "Hide and Seek Yokochō" is a narrow alley formed by the intersection of Kagurazaka Nakadori and several small paths, creating a "mutual" shape. Its name comes from the maze-like structure of the streets, where it is said that "even those who secretly follow someone here will lose sight of them as soon as they turn a corner." On either side of the beautifully paved marble stone road, shops that retain the appearance of traditional machiya (townhouses) are scattered, making it a popular filming location for various television dramas and movies. At night, the soft glow of streetlights from the shops illuminates the streets, weaving a dreamlike and tranquil atmosphere that blends traditional Japanese elements with modernity.

Highlights

The beautiful stone-paved roads and black walls, filled with the charm of the Japanese geisha district, often appear in TV dramas and movies. Enjoying a stroll or delicious food in this tranquil atmosphere is quite popular in Shinjuku. If you plan to walk along the slopes and stone-paved roads near the Kakurenbo Yokocho, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes. Turning into another alleyway will lead you to the Geisha Shinmichi, which retains the ambiance of the old flower district. It is accessible within 20 minutes from major stations in Tokyo, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, and Tokyo. Please be mindful of the nearby residential private roads and maintain silence and etiquette while walking.
