About Historical Site of Takamatsu Castle Ruins (Tamao Park)

Built facing the Seto Inland Sea, this seaside castle is one of Japan's three major water castles.

Details

Takamatsu Castle, also known as Tamamo Castle, was the residence of the Ikoma family for four generations and the Matsudaira family for eleven generations. It is a seaside castle built facing the Seto Inland Sea and is one of Japan's three major water castles. The entire castle ruins are now open to the public as Tamamo Park. The castle's tenshu (main keep) was once the largest castle tower in the Shikoku region, but it was dismantled in 1884 due to decay. However, buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, such as the Tsukimi Yagura (Moon Viewing Tower), the Suimon Gate, the Watari Yagura, and the Kuruwa Yagura, have been preserved in their original form and are open for free visits. The "Hikyu-kaku," built in 1917, is also a designated Important Cultural Property and is frequently used as a venue for various events such as tea ceremonies and concerts. The castle's moat is directly connected to the ocean, which is quite rare in Japan. Visitors can enjoy a "Castle Boat Experience" by taking wooden boats on the seawater-filled moat or participate in fun activities like feeding sea bream in an event called "Taiwan Castle." The park hosts various festivals and events throughout the year. Additionally, there are many castle-themed souvenirs that make great gifts, such as stickers of the red sea bream mascot "TAMAMON," model kits of the Takamatsu Castle tenshu, puzzles, and other original merchandise. *The visiting hours for the interior of the Tsukimi Yagura and the Suimon Gate are every Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM.*
