About Holland Slope
If you want to see the view of the cobblestone slope extending to the classic Western-style buildings of Nagasaki, this is the place to be.
Details
One of Nagasaki's famous tourist attractions, the Dutch Slope, is a cobblestone slope located in the Yamate area, where foreign residents once lived. At that time, the locals referred to the foreigners living here as "Dutch," which is why the slope frequented by them came to be known as the Dutch Slope. Although not only Dutch people lived here, the close trade relationship between Nagasaki and the Netherlands, lasting nearly 300 years, led to this designation.
Among the representative features of the Dutch Slope are the slope below the Kiyomizu Academy and the slope in front of the Seiko-in. The slope below the Kiyomizu Academy was established early in the development of this area, and as you ascend the slope, you can see the stone monument of the Dutch Slope. The next slope, known as the Kiyomizu Slope, serves as the entrance and exit path for students of the Kiyomizu Academy. The slope in front of the Seiko-in connects the tram station at Ishibashi to Higashiyamate and has a steep incline of about 15 degrees. Alongside it are brick walls and Western-style buildings, showcasing the typical scenery of Nagasaki that can be enjoyed around the Dutch Slope.
Highlights
The stone-paved roads soaked with rainwater have their own charm on rainy days.
At the slope in front of the Seikyo-in, there are seven Western-style buildings clustered together, forming a residential area rich in the Higashiyamate Western architectural style.
Near the stone monument at the Dutch slope, there is a Western-style building known as the Higashiyamate No. 13, which is open for visitors.
The Katsuura slope is a famous filming location for advertisements and movies.
The steep slopes can be slippery on rainy days, so it is recommended to wear shoes that are easy to walk in.
