🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
Pouring water and making a wish on the moss-covered Fudō Myōō.
📖 Details
Turning into a small alley from the bustling shopping district in Osaka's Minami area, you will find the Jodo Shinshu temple, Hōzen-ji. Unlike the lively atmosphere of the city center, this temple features charming stone pavements and houses the Konpira Shrine, the Niwa Hakudo Hall, and the Hatsuka Daijin.
Among these, the most well-known is the Nishi-mukō Fudō Myōō. This rare statue, covered in green moss, is also referred to as the Mizu-kake Fudō. It is said that after the war, a woman poured water over the statue as an offering, which became the origin of the current practice of pouring water over Fudō Myōō.
There are no specific rules for the water pouring ritual. First-time visitors should wash their hands at the well, then pour water over the central Fudō Myōō three times, followed by one pour each on the right and left attendants, and finally one more pour over Fudō Myōō. If the water in the bucket runs out, you can refill it from the well.
Pouring water over the Mizu-kake Fudō is believed to bring blessings for healing from illness, prosperous business, and good relationships. The experience of drawing water from the well is also likely to become a wonderful memory of your trip.
