Inubozaki is located at the easternmost tip of the Choshi Peninsula in the Kanto region, and it is a marine erosion plateau surrounded by water on three sides. The cape extends into the Pacific Ocean, with a circumference of about 500 meters. The rocks beneath the cliffs are violently struck by the surging waves, creating a stunning spectacle of crashing waves. The surrounding area features the white sandy beaches of Kunihama Coast, while the southern coastline is dotted with various strange rock formations and boulders. The rich natural scenery attracts many visitors each year, especially as it is renowned as a sacred place for watching the sunrise.
Standing at the top of the cape is the Inubozaki Lighthouse, the first Western-style white lighthouse built with domestically produced bricks in Japan. This lighthouse, which is of top-notch quality in Japan, is also a representative landmark of the Choshi area. It has been selected as one of the "50 Great Lighthouses of Japan" and one of the "100 Historical Lighthouses of the World," and it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The lighthouse stands 32 meters tall, and visitors can climb to the top via a spiral staircase inside the tower to enjoy the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean.
Next to the lighthouse is the "Inubozaki Lighthouse Museum," which displays various artifacts related to the history of the lighthouse, including a large lens used in Japan's first lighthouse. Additionally, the surrounding Cretaceous strata of Inubozaki are designated as a natural monument by the national government, and this area is included in the Japanese Geopark. After visiting the lighthouse, you can take a stroll along the rocky shore and observe the precious coastal plants.
