Iwamuro Onsen is located in the western part of Niigata City, surrounded by mountains such as Kakuda Mountain and Yahiko Mountain in a rural area. Established during the Edo period, it has a history of over three hundred years. The area features a variety of uniquely styled inns and restaurants, making it the only hot spring town in Niigata City, and it is very popular among locals.
Iwamuro Onsen is also known as "Reigan no Yu," with a legend that geese used to heal their wounds in the hot spring; its characteristic feature is the black color of the water. The "black water," a mixture of transparent crystalline calcium carbonate and irregularly shaped black sulfur compounds, has a soft and smooth texture that provides excellent moisturizing effects. Additionally, the area is widely recognized as the birthplace of Niigata Geisha, and performances of geisha dances can often be seen at various events held there.
Iwamuro Onsen is situated at the junction of Niigata City, Tsubame City, and Nagaoka City, and it takes only about five minutes by car to reach the Sea of Japan, making it an ideal choice for nearby sightseeing. Furthermore, the "Niigata City Iwamuro Tourist Facility Iwamuroya," which serves tourists, not only provides various sightseeing information but also has foot baths for relaxation.
