About Kachidoki Bridge (勝鬨橋)

Bringing together the wisdom and technology of our predecessors, it is one of the few remaining movable bridges in Japan.

Details

The Kachidoki Bridge, spanning the Sumida River in Tokyo's Chuo Ward, was the most downstream bridge on the Sumida River before the Tsukiji Bridge opened in 2018. Completed and opened in Showa 15 (1940), the Kachidoki Bridge is a double-leaf movable bridge measuring 246 meters in length and approximately 26 meters in width. At the time of its completion, it was referred to as the first movable bridge in East Asia. The bridge connects Tsukiji and Tsukishima, serving an important role in replacing the "Tsukishima Ferry" and "Tsukiji Ferry." Initially, it opened and closed five times a day, but after a decrease in shipping traffic and an increase in road traffic, it ceased its operations in Showa 45 (1970) after its last opening and closing. Kachidoki Bridge is one of the few remaining movable bridges in Japan and is the largest bridge in the country equipped with sophisticated movable span technology. It was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2007. The nearby exhibition facility, the Kachidoki Bridge Museum, was converted from the substation used for operating the bridge's opening and closing mechanism, where visitors can learn about the history and function of the Kachidoki Bridge. From the walkway on the bridge, one can enjoy views of famous attractions such as Tsukiji and Tsukishima, and at night, it is illuminated with beautiful lights, providing a completely different atmosphere to enjoy.
