Outside the museum, you can also find and view the mid-19th century residence "Hinomane Futatsuya," the simple deity statue "Ta no Kami Stone Statue," which prays for the prosperity of descendants and abundant harvests, and the traditional evil-repelling stone "Ishigantou" from southern Kyushu, which gives a glimpse into the lives of people at that time. The museum is located on the ruins of Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1873 and was restored in March 2020. It remains one of the largest surviving castle gates in Japan. The Kagoshima Prefectural Museum, Kagoshima Modern Literature Museum, and Kagoshima Fairy Tale Museum are also located in the area.
